A Bespoke suit is the ultimate gentlemen’s armor. Customized, perfectly fitted, and ready to show the world who you are. But no look is complete without the accessories that bring it all together. From ties to cologne, the small details that make a look great as just as important. Which is why you should view your tailor as more than just a tailor, but a stylist as well. Here are the essential accessories you’ll need to complete your look.
Choose the Right Shoes
Easily the most varied accessory for a man’s Bespoke wardrobe. Shoes have become synonymous with the Bespoke suit. And we could write an entire article on shoes alone (stay tuned), but what you need to know is quite straight forward. When selecting your shoes, be sure to select shoes that are comfortable. Now some might tell you that certain shoes are meant for certain suit types. Like you can’t wear Black shoes with a Brown suit. Forget that. Style is ever evolving. Part of the Bespoke life is customization and change. And nowhere better than your feet can you truly convey your sense of style.
TIP: Be sure to have four pairs of shoes if possible. Lace Up Oxfords, Boat Shoes, Black Dress Shoes, and Moccasins or Tennis Shoes. And be sure they are ALWAYS clean.
Customize with Tie’s and Handkerchief’s
We put these together as you’ll usually buy them in a set. However, you don’t always have to wear them as such. Although many men go tieless these days, there are several times in a man’s life that he’ll need a tie or two. We shall go into more detail later about the expansive world of Cravatology. But in the meantime, make sure to pick up a few ties and at least one bowtie.
TIP: A matching tie and handkerchief aren’t required. Play with different color and pattern combinations. And when choosing a tie, remember that natural materials like silk, wool, and cashmere make the best ties.
Bring Back The Watch
Possibly the most expensive item on this list. In a world of smartphones and Apple watches, traditional watches are becoming harder and harder to find on the wrist of everyday gentlemen. Part of the problem is the perception of their functionality. Which is a common misconception. Watches do more than tell time. They convey a sense of pride and maturity. Two traits often overlooked these days.
TIP: Don’t make high-cost a primary determining factor in your selection process. Pick a watch that’s well built and matches your style. Many “high end” manufacturers associate price with worth. They aren’t the same thing in many cases. Michael Kors, Boss, Movado, and Citizen make extremely beautiful and affordable watches.
Socks As A Featured Piece
Yes, gentlemen. Socks. We pay little attention to them yet they are possibly the most worn piece of clothing behind underwear. They right pair of socks can add an unexpected flair to your look. One which will make you stand out in the crowd. Few things are more distracting in fashion than a flash of hairy legs or white socks with a dark suit.
TIP: Be careful with the material socks are made from. Not all are created equal and you need to be aware of the material that best suits your needs. A general rule, get wool for warmth. Get cotton for comfort and absorption of sweat.
Fashion Over Function With Belts
Since we are talking about a Bespoke look here, a properly tailored pair of pants won’t fall down without a belt. So the need for a belt shifts from functionality to fashion. And your belt can say a lot about you. From a basic hook to an opulent Texas Rodeo Belt Buckle, belts are a powerful accessory. One which conveys confidence and class.
TIP: Pay close attention to the materials that your belt is made of. Including the buckle. There are two materials you want your belts made out of. Leather and Canvas. The leather is used in more formal settings. Canvas, more casual ones. One commonly used fashion tip, match your belt color to your shoes.
The Right Cologne For the Occasion
An oft overlooked but essential accessory, cologne leaves an instant impression and lasting one. A man’s scent often becomes associated with him. It’s been found in studies that a man’s scent is one of his most attractive traits to women. So choose wisely.
TIP: Moderation is key. A quality cologne won’t need you to use much. And be sure to apply cologne to three areas. The sides of your neck, your wrist, and pants legs. A very light amount on each. Be wary of knockoff colognes. They are often untested mixes and include materials you don’t want to place on your skin.
